Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1996 as a private, 501(C)3, non-profit, tax-exempt organization. A group of animal loving people from the Las Cruces area envisioned the need for a facility that would be modeled after the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah—the largest “no-kill” facility in the nation. After some searching for a home, the current location was established on part of what used to be the Cronin Ranch.

The Sanctuary is the only facility of its type in Doña Ana County. Shelter is provided  for abused and abandoned dogs and cats and those needing a home because owners are no longer able to care for them. A no-kill policy is practiced so needy pets have a place to live while we attempt to adopt them out into new, loving homes. Animals that are not adopted live out their lives at Safe Haven in dignity, well cared for, and treated with love and respect. Safe Haven is not affiliated with or financed by any municipal, county, state, or federal government agency. We depend on the generosity of the community through monetary gifts, bequests, grants and donations of items to our Thrift Shop, and subsequent Thrift Shop sales.

Our sanctuary is located on three acres of land about 10 miles east of Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, New Mexico. There are dog kennels, a cattery, isolation units and a play area, all accommodating up to 45 dogs and 35 cats. For directions and a map, click here. Adoption visits are scheduled by appointment 11am to 3 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. We endeavor to accommodate visitors at other times. However we encourage you to call for an appointment so that you do not miss us while we are making a frequent run into town or have to wait while we deal with other visitors ahead of you. For further information or to schedule an appointment call 575-805-5338.

Fostering can be a wonderful and rewarding way to enjoy the companionship that a pet provides without having the permanent commitment that goes along with pet ownership. By bringing one of our pets into your home while it awaits adoption, you are helping socialize and train that pet, making it even more adoptable. Whatever the reason, fostering might just be right for you. For a Foster Agreement form, click here.
